The New York Sirens will take the ice Wednesday night without their leader as captain Micah Zandee-Hart serves a one-game suspension during the team’s final home contest of the regular season. This will be a matchup with huge playoff ramifications.

The PWHL Player Safety Committee handed down the ban following Zandee-Hart’s illegal check to the head of Minnesota Frost forward Katy Knoll during Saturday’s 4–1 road loss. The third-period incident resulted in a major penalty at the time, but further review determined supplemental discipline was warranted.

Zandee Hart New York Sirens

Micah Zandee-Hart faced disciplinary action for the second time this season

According to the league’s statement, the committee concluded that the veteran defender delivered a forceful hit that made head contact the primary point of impact. The consensus was that the contact could have been avoided.

This marks Zandee-Hart’s second run-in with player safety officials this season, having previously received a $250 fine for cross-checking back in November.

The timing couldn’t be worse for New York. The Sirens currently sit five points behind the PWHL’s fourth and final playoff spot. They only have four games remaining, though they do hold a crucial game in hand.

Wednesday’s 7:00 PM showdown against the Toronto Sceptres at Prudential Center is one of their last opportunities to keep postseason hopes alive.

Sirens in a tough spot in the playoff race

Losing Zandee-Hart strips the Sirens of more than just defensive minutes. The team protected her during the expansion draft as one of only three players deemed essential to the franchise’s culture. Her absence leaves a leadership void at a moment when the team desperately needs veteran presence.

The suspension comes amid a challenging stretch for New York. The team has dropped seven consecutive road games, though three came at neutral Takeover Tour locations. Their last away victory was way back on January six against Toronto.

Head coach Greg Fargo has also identified special teams as an area requiring immediate improvement.

Fleet’s Ella Huber fined $250

In related disciplinary action, Boston Fleet rookie Ella Huber received a $250 fine for cross-checking Montreal’s Hayley Scamurra on Saturday. The Player Safety Committee determined Huber raised her stick with both arms, striking her opponent in the head with sufficient force to merit punishment.

It’s the first supplemental discipline of Huber’s young PWHL career.

For Zandee-Hart and the Sirens, the focus now shifts to what comes after Wednesday. The captain will return for the team’s remaining three contests, including a critical road matchup against the Ottawa Charge, the very team currently occupying that coveted fourth playoff position.

But first, her teammates must find a way to win without her. In a season where New York has already defied expectations by climbing out of the basement where they finished their first two campaigns, Wednesday’s game against Toronto could determine whether this turnaround story gets a playoff chapter.

The puck drops at 7:00 PM ET at the Prudential Center with the Sirens’ postseason dreams hanging in the balance.
