The third season of the PWHL is, at last, just a couple of days away. Why not recap the first two seasons with some superlatives based on essentially meaningless statistics? (Shout out to fellow PDub Hockey writer Natalia for inspiring me to care about random stats.)
Which goaltender has the most penalty minutes or the most points? Who loves to pot empty-net goals? How many face-offs do the top centres take per game?
Best Rule-Follower
Alex Carpenter, who played the first two seasons with New York and is now on the Seattle Torrent, has never taken a single penalty in her PWHL career. She’s the only skater (i.e., non-goalie) to have zero penalty minutes.
Most Likely to Pour Salt in the Wound
Emma Maltais of the Toronto Sceptres has netted eight regular-season goals in her PWHL career. Half have been empty-net goals.
Best Attendance
The 2024 regular season saw each team play 24 games. How many games did Susanna Tapani play that season? 26. She was traded from PWHL Minnesota to PWHL Boston in February 2024, giving her two bonus games that season.
Most Likely to Land 100% of the Shots She Takes
In the first shift of her first and only game ever, Sceptres reserve player Jess Kondas scored a top-shelf one-timer on her first and only shot ever. That leaves her with a shooting percentage of 100%—the best in the league.
Most Productive Goalie
Goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer, previously of the Ottawa Charge and now on the Vancouver Goldeneyes, has recorded two assists in her career. She has a higher points per game (0.05) than even some skaters who have played two seasons.
Busiest Centre
The Minnesota Frost’s Kelly Pannek has taken the most face-offs in the league—1,352 face-offs across 72 games. That means an average of 18.8 face-offs per game.
The Montréal Victoire’s Marie-Philip Poulin holds the title for most face-offs per game, at 23.2 (1,343 face-offs across 58 games).
Most Likely to Get Arrested
Ann-Renée Desbiens of the Victoire could learn a thing or two from Alex Carpenter. Despite being a goaltender, she has eight penalty minutes in her career—on par with her teammates Erin Ambrose and Laura Stacey.
Most Likely to Be Her Own Boss
Jade Downie-Landry takes matters into her own hands and can do it all herself. She now plays for the Victoire, but she scored a record five unassisted goals in her two seasons with New York.
Most Likely to Have You Covered
Need insurance? Look no further than Michela Cava, who joins the Vancouver Goldeneyes after two championship-winning seasons with the Frost. She holds the record for most insurance goals, with six (three in each season, including three across both playoff campaigns).
Most Likely to Force Players to Miss the Net
Fan-favourite Carly “CJ” Jackson, formerly on Toronto and now on Seattle, is the only goalie to have a shootout save percentage of 1.000% in the 2024–25 regular season. Yes, of the four shots they saw in the shootout, three missed the net—I call that great positioning.
Bonus: Best Dressed
These statistics come from my highly scientific method of capturing my personal favourite walk-in outfits of the month from last season. It’s a two-way tie between Jade Downie-Landry and Zoe Boyd. What can I say; I love neckwear.
