New potential PWHL franchises?

Last season, the Takeover Tour had eight stops, so this year’s 11 is a significant increase. It speaks to the growing fanbase the PWHL is gathering across the continent and how interest in the sport is rapidly expanding.

Both new expansion franchise, the Seattle Torrent and Vancouver Goldeneyes, hosted Takeover Tour games last season. It’s not a coincidence—these games allow the league to assess new potential markets, while allowing fans to experience the game when they normally wouldn’t get the opportunity to.

There are three cities that hosted Takeover Tour games both last year and this year: Québec City, Denver, and Detroit.

There are strong rumours that the PWHL could expand to a 12-team league by 2026–27, which likely means four of the 11 cities on this year’s Takeover Tour are in line to get expansion franchises. Perhaps the three repeat cities are at the top of that list.

What might the fourth be?

These games will be huge not only for the league right now, but for years to come.
